It’s longer than a hyphen and is commonly used to indicate a range or a pause. To type this symbol, just press and hold the Option key whilst you type the letter M on your Mac keyboard. A dash is a little horizontal line that floats in the middle of a line of text (not at the bottom that’s an underscore). The em dash shortcut for Mac is Comand+M. When writing emails and articles I often find myself in the need to use a long/em dash character, not to be confused with the hyphen - character. In Google Docs, go to Insert, Special Characters. In Word 2010 and up, you’ll need to go to Insert, Symbol. In Scrivener, you can access your operating system’s character map by going to Edit, Character Map. If the character does not have an HTML entity, you can use the decimal (dec) or hexadecimal (hex) reference. A grid with symbols will pop up, and you can select the em dash or en dash and copy and paste it into your document. However, if you want this symbol on Mac, there’s a shortcut for you. If you want any of these characters displayed in HTML, you can use the HTML entity found in the table below. The alt code method works fine on the Windows PC. You can see this post for more alternative ways to type this symbol. The en dash is slightly narrow than the em dash, and the hypen is slightly narrower again.
